B5E is an experimental garden that we designed and constructed. A simple terrace wraps around the house and binds it to the surrounding forest and extends the interior out into the garden. The garden is enclosed with a vertically slatted fence which creates a significantly noticeable microclimate which increases the comfort within the scandinavian climate, and makes it possible for species such as peaches to thrive. The planting is a hybrid matrix of local perennials selectively harvested from the nearby forest, fruit trees, a selection of climbing plants, and edible herbaceous perennials. In addition to being a testbed for combining unlikely combinations of plants, the garden works as a local stormwater infiltration zone for a significant amount of the roofwater from the rowhouse.
